Reasbeck writes Near Fall
book series to encourage kids to wrestle
Joe Reasbeck of Lago Vista, Texas has been rolling around on mats since he was
only two years old. Reasbeck, who grew up in Wisconsin, followed in the
footsteps of his father, also named Joe, who coached the sport for several
decades. As a competitor, the elder Joe won many National Titles, and recently
wrestled in the Veterans Nationals. It was only natural that Joe, the son,
follow in his fathers footsteps.
The younger Joe wrestled for the University of Minnesota, competed on the
Senior level in Greco-Roman and trained for the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games in
Greco-Roman wrestling. He is now a published author, with the subject of his
writing his favorite sport.
Standel Publishing published and released the first of the four-book series in
2007 by Reasbeck called Near Fall: Book One-- The Adventures of Matt and Mike.
Joe was inspired to write this series to try to raise awareness of the sport as
well as promote wrestling by weaving a compelling story about life and
grappling. He would love to make this fictional novel, Near Fall, an
entertainment channel to reach kids, parents and coaches around the world.
I have the deepest respect for this sport. I participated in every sport I
could get my hands on. However, there is something very different about going
out on a mat in front of family, friends, girlfriends, teammates, coaches and
even strangers--all by yourself and facing an opponent that is equally matched
to you and looking to dismantle you. The combination of the mastery of
technique, athleticism, strategy, toughness and extreme endurance puts
wrestling on top of the podium of athletic endeavor. Wrestlers truly are
warriors, Reasbeck said.
The biggest thing wrestling has taught me is persistence. I had been knocked
down so many times from opponents, injuries, and internal struggles that I came
to realize that wrestling teaches you whatever life throws at you, you can
handle. You learn to roll with the punches and discover that certain perseverance
wrestling teaches you. I dont think that is unique to me, I think it is
symptomatic of wrestling. Wrestlers are a mentally tough bunch. There is a bond amongst wrestlers, an instant
respect.
He notes that wrestlers also tend to become quite confident because of the work
it has taken them to become successful. Whether one is skilled or just
beginning, Reasbeck feels as though one can always learn from his or her
wrestling experiences.
As a coach, you talk a lot about the elite athletes, but the courage and faith
that a kid demonstrates when he knows he’s outclassed, and walks out to the
center of the mat anyhow--thats really intriguing to me. I have a lot of
respect for those kids, even more so at times than I have for the elite
athletes, said Reasbeck.
I really applaud them for taking that step into the arena and doing their
absolute best. Those who stick with it improve and eventually wind up being the
person with their hand raised but more importantly, they know how they got
there. They understand the price that had to be paid. I think that translates well
for the rest of their life.
Near Falls appeal is the winning combination of the underdog and sport. In this
book, whatever problems are encountered, wrestling is always part of the
solution.

Did you know that BYW joined a dual meet league this year?
Did you know that BYW joined a dual meet league this year?
New this year BYW has joined the MVC Dual Meet League. It’s an 8 team league, is very organized and will give our kids some really great experience. The first meet is scheduled for 12/31/11. Don’t worry, we’ll be out of there in plenty of time to ring in the new year. The whole thing wraps by the end of January. We are very excited about it!
2012 MVC Weight Classes
This year’s Weight classes are (same as last year) follow:
60,65,70,74,79,83,89,92,97,103,108,114,120,130,145, 155,170
Note
* These weights are subject to change for the better of the league.
* * We will likely have to tweak these as needed, especially on the higher weights, to get as many teams to field full teams as possible.
*** Heavy weights will be wrestled as exhibition bouts like previous years.

Jordan Burroughs wins gold World Championships
2x NCAA champ Jordan Burroughs wins gold at 2011 World Wrestling Championships
September 18, 2011
Jordan Burroughs won a World title on Sunday night
ISTANBUL, Turkey – Jordan Burroughs had not wrestled a freestyle match in nearly three years when he stepped on the mat for April’s U.S. Open.
Five months later, he’s a World champion.
Burroughs capped a phenomenal tournament and a memorable 2011 by sweeping 2010 World silver medalist Sadegh Goudarzi of Iran 3-2, 4-1 to capture a gold medal at the World Championships on Sunday night at the Sinan Erdem Dome.
"It's an amazing feeling right now," Burroughs said. "A lot of people doubted that I could even make the team this year. I am here, and I did it. I am feeling really good right now."
Burroughs, 23, competing in his first Senior World Championships, becomes the first U.S. World champion in freestyle since Bill Zadick in 2006. Burroughs competes at 74 kg/163 lbs.
"It felt amazing to be out there. Iran has an amazing crowd," Burroughs said. "I didn't want them to get involved, so I did my part and stayed with my offense. I felt good. I did some scrambling finally in a freestyle match. My coach told me not to reach between the legs. This time, that paid off and I got two points."
The win by Burroughs also clinched third place for the U.S. in the team race. The U.S. finished with 38 points. Russia won the title with 43 points and Iran was second with 41. The U.S. made a quantum leap from last year where it finished 22nd with five points.
Burroughs earns $50,000 from the Living the Dream Medal Fund for winning his World gold medal.

Camp Massapoag Rocked!
Mitch Clark Aug 20th & 21st in Dighton, MA
Mitch Clark is running a wrestling clinic in Dighton, Massachusetts on Sat & Sun, August 20th & 21st. We can bring a group of 5-20 kids for a flat rate of $750.00 (the individual participant entry fee is $150.00). If we could get 10 kids and average the savings, $75.00 each would be a steal for this event! Mitch is an awsome clinician & this is a great opportunity to keep the kids involved during the off season (it’s before the weekend football games start up). Let us know if you have an interest in this, we have a few kids already..but need a few more.

Burlington Youth wrestling at BU vs. Harvard Meet
BU Wrestling Retains Charles Cup with 25-18 Victory over Harvard on Friday 02-11-11 while 50 of Burlington wrestlings finest (parents included) look on. Santaite, Hall earn pins; Terriers extend win streak to seven!!
The Boston University wrestling team extended its dual win streak to seven and retained the Charles Cup with a 25-17 home victory over Harvard on Friday, February 11th at Case Gym in Boston. The Terriers improved to 9-5-1 with the win.
With the Terriers trailing, 15-12, after six matches, junior Hunter Meys picked up a 15-4 major decision over Mike Sadler at 174 to give BU the lead for good. Senior Brock Mantella followed with a hard-fought 3-2 decision against Cameron Croy at 184 before junior John Hall gave the home squad a commanding 25-12 lead with a pin of Bryan Panzano at 4:30 of their 197-pound bout.
After Harvard opened with a technical fall at 125, junior Fred Santaite answered with a fall at 4:00 versus Fermin Mendez at 133. A major decision at 141 by the Crimson's Joe Marino gave the visitors a 9-6 edge, but they forfeited at 149 to Nestor Taffur to make the score 12-9 in the Terriers' favor. In a crucial point of the match, freshman Nick Tourville did not allow eighth-ranked Walter Pepperman to secure bonus points in their 157-pound match. Tourville used a third-period takedown to keep his final deficit within seven points at 11-4.
Our Burlington families really enjoyed the visit and had the opportunity to meet the team members after the match. They were so sweet to our kids and even signed our home made signs and gave team photos!
