NY North East Youth Duals

What a long strange trip it's been! Members from our team traveled to Hoosick, New York in August to take part in a large dual meet. There were 8 teams in total from varying states. Our team was a bit of a mix, with Cameron Soda, Zachery Soda and Ed Stanton from Burlington, MA (Luke Nigro came to coach us!) Also from Mass on our team was John Anderson from Smitty's Wrestling Barn and Justin Kelleher hailing from Wadsworths Wrestling Gym in Franklin. We were lucky to have other kids join our team to help cover the weight classes from NH, OH, WV and NY. We made new friends, learned some cool moves, got some nice wrestling medals, ate TONS and TONS of pizza (some good, some bad) and spent a fortune on car repairs but we survived and managed to take 5th place. They have already scheduled next years meet for August 6th, 2011 and want us to come back so mark your calendars!!!

Anthony Bagni - A Burlington resident, Tony has been coaching the Burlington Youth program for 16 years and is very dedicated to the sport. He's really patient and great with the kids. His contributions are a major part of the tremendous success the Burlington High team has achieved over the years. His past accomplishments include having wrestled for the Shawsheen Tech program for 4 years where he was the team leader and captain.

Chris Doherty began wrestling in the Youth program when he was in 6th grade. Continuing to wrestle right into high school, he joined the BHS wrestling team and participated until graduation in 1996. He wrestled for the inaugural UNH club team in 1999-2000. Upon graduation from UNH Chris began coaching the Burlington Youth Program. He is in his 11th season with the program and we are so glad to have him! He is an active runner who encourages the kids to live healthfully and exercise all year round.

Dan Doherty is in his 8th season coaching the Burlington Youth Wrestling program. He wrestled in the Burlington Youth program himself from Grade 5 – Grade 8, and then went on to wrestle for Burlington High School, where he was a team captain and state place winner his senior year. Outside of wrestling he stays active by running and playing softball. We welcome Dan back for another year of fun and learning with our kids.

Our regular 2010/2011 season has now ended. Our normal in-season weekly practices are Monday and Thursday from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in the Burlington High School Wrestling Gym. Remember, If there is no school, there will be no practice that evening. You can register for the program that evening or in advance using the form on this site. See the link at the top of the page. The program fee is $150.00 per child for Burlington residents.

We do accept non-residents on a case by case basis. The out of town rate is $250.00, please send and e-mail to BurlingtonYouthWrestling@Gmail.com for this special consideration.

BYW begins the season in November and accepts new wrestlers into the program through mid January. Experienced wrestlers may be accepted after January 15th only with our coaches approval. It is not mandatory that wrestlers attend the many tournaments that are held throughout New England during the winter months, yet we hope to see as many attend as possible so we can support each other and increase the teams presence on the local wrestling scene. Wrestling is a team sport and we hope to promote team spirit and camaraderie in our wrestlers. We do anticipate all team members participation in our home tournament, The Red Devil Rumble on January 23rd at Burlington High School.

About The High School Program

The Burlington High School wrestling program is coached by Stephen Lemelin, Brian McNeill and Paul Shvartsman, all are BHS alumni.　Burlington Wrestling is one of the most successful programs in Massachusetts.　Established in 1976 by Joe LeVasseur, Burlington won the New England Championship in 1983, an All-State Title in 2010 and a State Title in 2009.　Burlington has also had 27 individual State Champs, 21 of whom wrestled in the Youth Program. This years High School team has incredible success both on and off the mat. All 4 of these guys are going on to wrestle in college. Intense effort and hard work results in great success!

These boys went on to be part of the Burlington High Wrestling team that finished their season with a final record of 30-1, the best record in school history, and a state championship. We are so proud of our youth program graduates!!!
